The setup
We visited Sandbar on August 1st during the early lunch rush. We'd just finished a morning of kayaking and an afternoon of biking around the island. We were hungry, the beach location sounded perfect, and we grabbed a table right on the sand. It seemed like the right choice at the time.
What happened
We sat down around 12:30pm and waited about 10 minutes for a server to come greet us. The restaurant wasn't visibly packed, which made the wait puzzling. Once we ordered—a buffalo chicken sandwich for $19 and a pub burger for $24—we settled in to wait. Forty-eight minutes later, our food arrived at 1:08pm. When we asked our server about the delay, she mentioned that the restaurant was actually slow that day and that they had many servers on staff. This explanation didn't help us understand why service was dragging, especially with what she described as adequate staffing.
The experience
The seating is genuinely the best part. Sitting right on the beach with the ocean breeze, watching the water while you eat—that part is worth experiencing. The food, unfortunately, doesn't match the setting. The buffalo chicken sandwich had undercooked chicken in some pieces. The pub burger wasn't memorable. Both items arrived lukewarm, suggesting they'd been sitting in the window longer than necessary. During our visit, we noticed multiple servers standing around talking rather than attending to tables or getting food out. The disconnect between adequate staffing and poor service was frustrating.
Where it fell short
- Slow service with no clear reason. The restaurant wasn't packed, staffing wasn't an issue, yet a 38 minute wait for lunch entrees is unacceptable.
- Food quality issues. Undercooked chicken and lukewarm food suggest either a kitchen issue or a timing issue between the kitchen and the server.
- Price doesn't match value. For $19 to $24 per sandwich, the food quality should be significantly better.
Tips if you go
- Visit early morning before 11am or after 2pm to avoid the lunch window and potentially shorten your wait.
- Set realistic expectations. The location is the draw, not the food quality.
- Bring a book or be prepared to relax. You will be waiting.
- Consider eating elsewhere on Anna Maria Island and grabbing a drink at Sandbar instead. The drinks are likely faster and more reliable than the food.

The verdict
Not worth it. The beachfront seating is legitimately nice, and yes, eating on the sand with an ocean view is appealing. But Sandbar relies too heavily on its location and doesn't deliver on service or food quality. When a slow restaurant tells you it's not actually busy, something is wrong with the operation. For the prices charged, you should expect better—better food that's served hot, better timing, and better attention from staff. There are other dining options on Anna Maria Island. Spend your money elsewhere.
Beautiful location, disappointing food and service. The view isn't enough to excuse the wait and the quality.
