Overview
Three days exploring DC's National Mall, Dupont Circle, and neighborhoods. Monuments and museums are world-class and free. The city is highly walkable. Food ranged from exceptional (Boqueria, Matriarch) to disappointing (Miss Shirley's, Le Diplomat) to solid (Surfside, Moonraker).
Day 1: National Mall
Friday arrival. Started with breakfast at Mikey and Mels (3/10—bagels fell apart, poor assembly). Hit the monuments: Lincoln Memorial, WWII Memorial, and Smithsonians—all excellent and free. Explored the National Mall all afternoon. Dinner at Boqueria (9/10)—exceptional Spanish tapas. Late night at Moonraker Rooftop Bar (6/10—stunning views, $75 minimum, $40 cocktails, hidden fees).
Day 2: Neighborhoods
Saturday exploring Dupont Circle and Georgetown. Brunch at Miss Shirley's (2/10—temperature chaos, poor construction, biscuits fall apart). Mid-day coffee pickup at Matriarch Coffee (9/10—excellent matcha, proper technique, neighborhood charm). Lunch at Surfside Taco Stand (8/10—quality quesadillas, fresh ingredients). Dinner at Le Diplomat (5/10—beautiful dining room, uninspired pasta, frozen fries).
Day 3: Airport Day
Sunday morning before heading to the airport. Breakfast at Bullfrog Bagels—bacon egg and cheese and sausage egg and cheese ($10 each) were better tasting than day 1 but notably smaller. Added a South Block Smoothie (beautiful color, but lacked flavor). Midday lunch before departure at Wize Guy Pizza—two slices (one cheese, one buffalo chicken), two garlic rolls, and two pizza cups for $19. Thin slices made to order; the garlic rolls were the standout. The pizza cups would have been excellent if not burnt. Good value, could've used more flavor overall.
The Verdict
Worth visiting (7/10). DC's monuments and museums are world-class and free. The neighborhoods are walkable. Food is inconsistent—stick with recommendations rather than relying on reviews and ratings.
Excellent museums and monuments. Food is hit or miss.
