Overview
Le Diplomat is a French brasserie in Washington DC with an undeniably beautiful dining room and sophisticated atmosphere. The problem is what arrives on the plate doesn't match the promise of the space. The restaurant banks on ambiance and design, but execution in the kitchen is inconsistent and uninspired.
What didn't work
- Uninspired pasta. The cacio e pepe—one of the simplest dishes to execute—lacked depth and proper balance. Should be better than this.
- Frozen fries. On a burger at this price point, serving frozen fries shows a lack of care. They're supposed to be fresh-cut, not mass-produced.
- Atmosphere can't carry the meal. The beautiful room sets expectations that the food doesn't deliver on. Beautiful backdrop but disappointing substance.
The verdict
Skip it unless you need the ambiance (5/10). Le Diplomat trades on atmosphere and location, but doesn't deliver on culinary execution. If you're looking for a beautiful space for a special occasion and willing to overlook middling food, go for the experience. Otherwise, there are better options in DC.
